Cheviot Hills

This image is a view across to The Cheviot itself, an ancient shield volcano and the highest point in the Cheviot Hills at 815m, seen here from Dere Street, a Roman road high up in the hills. This area lies within the Otterburn Ranges, a military training area which is sometimes closed to the public during training exercises. However, it remains one of the wildest and loneliest parts of Northumberland National Park, with huge skies, and far horizons in all directions. The road continues over the hills and descends into the beautiful Coquet valley, winding down to Alwinton and Rothbury.
