About

Simon Fraser’s photography began with expeditions in South America and the Himalayas whilst at university. His mountaineering experience led to employment with the British Antarctic Survey for three years in the 1980s as a Field Guide, assisting scientists in world leading polar research whilst prioritising safety in the most inhospitable environment on earth. On return to UK he launched into a freelance career in professional photography and has worked on science, nature and environment assignments around the world. He lives beside a deciduous woodland, below heather moorland  in the heart of Northumberland National Park, and  enjoys beekeeping, organic gardening and mountaineering.

Photography

Simon’s main interest is on landscape and environmental photography, from remote wilderness regions to tiny details of nature at home. His work is represented by Science Photo Library, a stock agency which distributes the very best scientific images and footage, and his images have been published in many countries worldwide. He also supplies cards, prints and calendars to clients such as the National Trust, Eden Project, Tate St Ives, The Alnwick Garden and Northumberland National Park.

Gallery

There are images from many parts the world including subjects such as the polar regions, volcanic eruptions, deserts, trees and forests, wild flowers, honeybees, mountains and glaciers, seascapes, wildlife, scientific research, pollution, and environmental topics.

SYCAMORE GAP

Like so many others, I was shocked and saddened by the loss of this beautiful tree on 28 September 2023. It was a much loved, unique landmark in the heart of Northumberland, which I had photographed and walked past on many occasions.

Since then, there has been an overwhelming response from people across the region, with countless ideas and suggestions being offered to the National Trust and Northumberland National Park Authority. Ironically, my Seasons of Northumberland calendar 2024 (which sold out all too quickly) depicted a night time view of Sycamore Gap on the front cover, and in the aftermath of the felling of the tree, there was a huge surge of interest in cards and prints.

GREETING CARDS

Beautiful landscapes of Northumberland, Cornwall and Scotland. Six images of the iconic Sycamore Gap on Hadrian’s Wall through the seasons of the year including night time views of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.

OUR WORLD

Global environment cards, with images of polar regions, deserts, rainforest, sea, moutains, honeybees and wild flowers.

PRINTS

Simon’s prints have been popular for many years, and especially in recent months after the felling of the beautiful tree at Sycamore Gap on Hadrian’s Wall. The night sky views of the tree have been of particular interest to customers in the UK and across the world, and theree are also may other images to select from.
